Jeremiah 8: No Balm in Gilead
The people cling to deceit and refuse to return, and the prophet's heart breaks as he asks why the wound of his people is not healed.
Jeremiah 8 (WEB)
1 “At that time,” says Yahweh, “they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves;
2 and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the army of the sky, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and which they have worshiped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried, they shall be for dung on the surface of the earth.
3 Death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue that remain of this evil family, that remain in all the places where I have driven them,” says Yahweh of Armies.
4 “Moreover you shall tell them, ‘Thus says Yahweh: “‘Shall men fall, and not rise up again? Shall one turn away, and not return?
5 Why then have the people of Jerusalem fallen back by a perpetual backsliding? They cling to deceit, they refuse to return.
6 I listened and heard, but they didn’t say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Everyone turns to his course, as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.
7 Yes, the stork in the sky knows her appointed times; and the turtledove, the swallow, and the crane observe the time of their coming; but my people don’t know Yahweh’s law.
8 How do you say, “We are wise, and Yahweh’s law is with us?” But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has worked falsely.
9 The wise men are disappointed. They are dismayed and trapped. Behold, they have rejected Yahweh’s word. What kind of wisdom is in them?
10 Therefore will I give their wives to others, and their fields to those who shall possess them: for everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest every one deals falsely.
11 They have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among those who fall; in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says Yahweh.
13 I will utterly consume them, says Yahweh: no grapes shall be on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
14 Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities, and let us be silent there; for Yahweh our God has put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Yahweh.
15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
16 The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan: at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones the whole land trembles; for they have come, and have devoured the land and all that is in it; the city and those who dwell therein.
17 For, behold, I will send serpents, adders, among you, which will not be charmed; and they shall bite you, says Yahweh.
18 Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow! My heart is faint within me.
19 Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off: isn’t Yahweh in Zion? Isn’t her King in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their engraved images, and with foreign vanities?
20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt: I mourn; dismay has taken hold on me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there? why then isn’t the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
Jeremiah 8 (KJV)
1 At that time, saith the Lord, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:
2 And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
3 And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the Lord of hosts.
4 Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
5 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the Lord.
8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them?
10 Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the Lord.
13 I will surely consume them, saith the Lord: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.
14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord.
15 We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!
16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.
17 For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the Lord.
18 When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.
19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the Lord in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?
20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.
21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Summary
Judgment reaches even the dead, whose bones will be exposed before the sun, moon, and stars they worshiped, so terrible that the survivors will prefer death to life. God marvels at the unnatural stubbornness of his people: men fall and rise again, those who stray return, yet Jerusalem clings to deceit and refuses to return. No one repents, no one asks, what have I done, but each rushes headlong into sin like a horse charging into battle. Even the migrating birds know their appointed seasons, but God's people do not know his law. The scribes boast of wisdom while their lying pen has falsified the law, so the supposedly wise will be dismayed and trapped. Once again God exposes leaders who heal the people's wound lightly, crying peace where there is none, and who feel no shame. There will be no grapes on the vine, no figs on the tree, and an enemy whose horses snort from Dan will devour the land. The chapter dissolves into lament. The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and the people are not saved. The prophet, hurt for the hurt of his people, mourns and cries out the haunting question: is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician there, why then is the health of the daughter of his people not recovered?
Voices
- Yahweh (the LORD) — The God who marvels at his people's unnatural refusal to return, exposes the false wisdom of the scribes, and brings judgment on a land that does not know his law.
- Jeremiah — The grieving prophet, hurt for the hurt of his people, who voices the famous lament over a wound that seems beyond healing despite the balm of Gilead.
- The scribes and wise men — Those who boast that they have the law and are wise, yet have handled it falsely with a lying pen, so their wisdom proves to be no wisdom at all.
Key Verse
Jeremiah 8:22 (WEB)
Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there? why then isn’t the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
Lessons Learned
- Refusing to return when we fall is an unnatural and tragic stubbornness.
- Even creatures follow their God-given instincts, while God's people can ignore his law.
- Boasting in wisdom is worthless when that wisdom rejects the word of the Lord.
- Sin leaves a wound that human remedies cannot heal; only God can restore.
- True repentance gets back up. “Shall men fall, and not rise up again? Shall one turn away, and not return?” (Jeremiah 8:4, WEB). It is unnatural to fall and refuse to return to God.
- Self-examination is missing in hard hearts. “No one repents… saying, ‘What have I done?’” (Jeremiah 8:6, WEB). A heart that never asks that question rushes blindly into ruin.
- Wisdom that rejects God's word is folly. “They have rejected Yahweh’s word. What kind of wisdom is in them?” (Jeremiah 8:9, WEB). All true understanding begins with submitting to God.
- Sin's wound needs a true Physician. “Is there no balm in Gilead? is there no physician there?” (Jeremiah 8:22, WEB). The lament points beyond every earthly cure to the healing only God provides.
- Why does God find it so strange that his people will not return after they fall?
- What does the example of the migrating birds teach about the people's failure?
- How have the scribes and wise men gone wrong, and why is their wisdom condemned?
- What is Jeremiah expressing in his cry about the balm in Gilead?
- When you fall into sin, what helps you rise and return rather than clinging to it?
- Normally those who fall get up and those who stray return, yet Jerusalem clings to deceit and refuses to return (8:4-5). God highlights how contrary to nature it is to persist in sin, making their stubbornness all the more tragic.
- Storks, turtledoves, swallows, and cranes instinctively keep their appointed times, but God's people do not know his law (8:7). Even creatures follow their Maker's order, shaming a people who ignore the One who made and redeemed them.
- The scribes boast that they are wise and have the law, yet a lying pen has falsified it, so their wisdom is exposed as folly (8:8-9). Knowledge and status are worthless, even dangerous, when they reject God's word.
- Gilead was famous for its healing balm, so Jeremiah's anguished question asks why, with remedy seemingly available, his people remain unhealed (8:22). The answer is that they refuse the only true cure, repentance and return to God, who alone is the great Physician.
- This is a personal-application question. Invite members to share, gently, what helps them turn back after failing, whether confession, Scripture, or community. As leader, point to Christ as the Physician who heals the deepest wound and welcomes the returning sinner.
