Jeremiah 7: Do Not Trust Deceptive Words
Standing in the temple gate, Jeremiah warns that chanting the Lord's temple cannot save a people who steal, murder, and chase other gods.
Jeremiah 7 (WEB)
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,
2 “Stand in the gate of Yahweh’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, ‘Hear Yahweh’s word, all you of Judah, who enter in at these gates to worship Yahweh.’”
3 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, “Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 Don’t trust in lying words, saying, ‛Yahweh’s temple, Yahweh’s temple, Yahweh’s temple, are these.’
5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;
6 if you don’t oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and don’t shed innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your own hurt:
7 then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, from of old even forever more.
8 Behold, you trust in lying words, that can’t profit.
9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known,
10 and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‛We are delivered;’ that you may do all these abominations?
11 Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says Yahweh.
12 “But go now to my place which was in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.
13 Now, because you have done all these works,” says Yahweh, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you didn’t hear; and I called you, but you didn’t answer:
14 therefore will I do to the house which is called by my name, in which you trust, and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.
15 I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brothers, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
16 “Therefore don’t pray for this people, neither lift up a cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me; for I will not hear you.
17 Don’t you see what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
19 Do they provoke me to anger? says Yahweh. “Don’t they provoke themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?”
20 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Behold, my anger and my wrath shall be poured out on this place, on man, and on animal, and on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.”
21 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat meat.
22 For I didn’t speak to your fathers, nor command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
23 but this thing I commanded them, saying, ‘Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’
24 But they didn’t listen nor turn their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
26 yet they didn’t listen to me, nor inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff: they did worse than their fathers.
27 “You shall speak all these words to them; but they will not listen to you: you shall also call to them; but they will not answer you.
28 You shall tell them, ‘This is the nation that has not listened to the voice of Yahweh their God, nor received instruction. Truth has perished, and is cut off from their mouth.’
29 Cut off your hair, and throw it away, and take up a lamentation on the bare heights; for Yahweh has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
30 “For the children of Judah have done that which is evil in my sight,” says Yahweh. “They have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.
31 They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I didn’t command, nor did it come into my mind.
32 Therefore behold, the days come”, says Yahweh, “that it shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter; for they shall bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.
33 The dead bodies of this people shall be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth; and no one shall frighten them away.
34 Then I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste.”
Jeremiah 7 (KJV)
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
2 Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord.
3 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.
4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these.
5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt:
7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord.
12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.
13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not;
14 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.
15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.
16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.
17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.
19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Lord: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?
20 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.
21 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
23 But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did worse than their fathers.
27 Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.
28 But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the Lord their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
29 Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on high places; for the Lord hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the Lord: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it.
31 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
33 And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.
34 Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

Summary
God stations Jeremiah in the gate of the temple to confront worshipers who file in trusting hollow slogans. They chant, the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, as if the building guaranteed their safety, but God commands them not to trust in such lying words. Only if they truly amend their ways, do justice, stop oppressing the foreigner, fatherless, and widow, stop shedding innocent blood, and stop following other gods, will he let them dwell in the land. Instead they steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, then come stand in his house and say, we are delivered, treating it as a den of robbers. God points them to Shiloh, where he once made his name dwell and which he destroyed for Israel's wickedness, warning that he will do the same to this temple. He tells Jeremiah not even to pray for this people, exposing how whole families bake cakes for the queen of the sky and provoke him. He reminds them that at the Exodus he asked for obedience above sacrifice, yet they walked backward, stiffening their necks worse than their fathers. They have defiled his house with idols and built the high places of Topheth to burn their own children, so the valley will be called the Valley of Slaughter, and joy will cease from the land.
Voices
- Yahweh (the LORD) — The God who refuses to let his temple become a refuge for the unrepentant, calling for justice and obedience and warning that Jerusalem will share Shiloh's ruin.
- Jeremiah — The prophet stationed at the temple gate to deliver the sermon, even forbidden to pray for the people whose hearts have hardened beyond intercession.
- The worshipers of Judah — The people who trust the slogan of the temple while stealing, murdering, and serving idols, and who burn incense to the queen of the sky and their own children to false gods.
Key Verse
Jeremiah 7:4 (WEB)
Don’t trust in lying words, saying, ‛Yahweh’s temple, Yahweh’s temple, Yahweh’s temple, are these.’
Lessons Learned
- Religious privileges and sacred places cannot shelter a heart that refuses to obey.
- God desires justice toward the vulnerable far more than impressive worship.
- Treating God's house as a hiding place for sin makes it a den of robbers.
- Persistent rebellion brings down even the holiest institutions, as Shiloh's ruin proved.
- Slogans cannot save a sinful heart. “Don’t trust in lying words” about the temple (Jeremiah 7:4, WEB). Religious confidence is empty when life contradicts it.
- True religion shows in justice. God wants them to “execute justice” and not oppress “the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow” (Jeremiah 7:5-6, WEB). Worship is validated by how we treat the vulnerable.
- God's house is not a refuge for sin. “Has this house… become a den of robbers in your eyes?” (Jeremiah 7:11, WEB). Jesus quotes this when cleansing the temple, exposing the same false security.
- Obedience matters more than sacrifice. God commanded, “Listen to my voice” above burnt offerings (Jeremiah 7:23, WEB). What he most desires is a people who walk in his ways.
- What are the deceptive words the people trust, and why are they so dangerous?
- What specific changes does God require if they are to remain in the land?
- Why does God point to Shiloh, and what lesson is the temple meant to draw from it?
- What does God reveal about his priorities by valuing obedience over sacrifice?
- What religious assurances or routines might you be leaning on as a substitute for true obedience?
- They chant the temple of Yahweh as a guarantee of safety, trusting the building rather than repentance (7:4). It is dangerous because it lets people feel secure in sin, mistaking religious proximity for a right relationship with God.
- God requires that they amend their ways, do justice between neighbors, stop oppressing the foreigner, fatherless, and widow, stop shedding innocent blood, and stop following other gods (7:5-6). Genuine change in conduct, not ritual, is the condition for blessing.
- Shiloh was where God first made his name dwell, yet he destroyed it for the people's wickedness (7:12-14). It proves that even a sacred site is no protection against judgment; God's presence is not bound to a building when his people rebel.
- By recalling that at the Exodus he asked first for obedience, to listen to his voice and walk in his ways, rather than for sacrifices (7:22-23), God shows that relationship and obedience are central, and ritual without them is hollow.
- This is a personal-application question. Invite members to name routines, church attendance, or heritage they might treat as a safeguard apart from real obedience. As leader, gently steer toward heartfelt trust and changed living rather than mere religious form.
