Jeremiah 16: A Life That Preaches
Forbidden to marry, mourn, or feast, Jeremiah's very life becomes a living sign of the coming desolation and the hope beyond it.
Jeremiah 16 (WEB)
1 Yahweh’s word came also to me, saying,
2 You shall not take a wife, neither shall you have sons or daughters, in this place.
3 For thus says Yahweh concerning the sons and concerning the daughters who are born in this place, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and concerning their fathers who became their father in this land:
4 They shall die grievous deaths: they shall not be lamented, neither shall they be buried; they shall be as dung on the surface of the ground; and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth.
5 For thus says Yahweh, Don’t enter into the house of mourning, neither go to lament, neither bemoan them; for I have taken away my peace from this people, says Yahweh, even loving kindness and tender mercies.
6 Both great and small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them;
7 neither shall men break bread for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.
8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and to drink.
9 For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
10 It shall happen, when you shall show this people all these words, and they shall tell you, Why has Yahweh pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against Yahweh our God?
11 Then you shall tell them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, says Yahweh, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshiped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
12 and you have done evil more than your fathers; for, behold, you walk every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so that you don’t listen to me:
13 therefore will I cast you out of this land into the land that you have not known, neither you nor your fathers; and there you shall serve other gods day and night; for I will show you no favor.
14 Therefore behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that it shall no more be said, As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
15 but, As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the countries where he had driven them. I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers.
16 Behold, I will send for many fishermen, says Yahweh, and they shall fish them up; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks.
17 For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, neither is their iniquity concealed from my eyes.
18 First I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable things, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.
19 Yahweh, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, vanity and things in which there is no profit.
20 Shall a man make to himself gods, which yet are no gods?
21 Therefore behold, I will cause them to know, this once will I cause them to know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Yahweh.
Jeremiah 16 (KJV)
1 The word of the Lord came also unto me, saying,
2 Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.
3 For thus saith the Lord concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land;
4 They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
5 For thus saith the Lord, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the Lord, even lovingkindness and mercies.
6 Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:
7 Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.
8 Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.
9 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.
10 And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?
11 Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the Lord, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
12 And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me:
13 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.
14 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that it shall no more be said, The Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
15 But, The Lord liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.
16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.
17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes.
18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things.
19 O Lord, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods?
21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The Lord.

Summary
Yahweh's word comes to Jeremiah with a series of startling prohibitions: he is not to take a wife or have children in this place, for the sons and daughters born here will die grievous deaths. He must not enter a house of mourning or lament the dead, because God has withdrawn his peace, his loving kindness, and his tender mercies from this people. Nor may he join a house of feasting, for God will silence the voice of mirth, the voice of the bridegroom and the bride. Jeremiah's solitary, sign-filled life is meant to provoke the question: why has Yahweh pronounced such evil? The answer is that the people's fathers forsook God and served other gods, and they have done worse than their fathers, each walking in the stubbornness of his evil heart. So they will be cast into a land they do not know. Yet woven into the judgment is a thread of hope: days are coming when people will no longer swear by the God who brought Israel out of Egypt, but by the God who brings them back from the land of the north. God will send fishermen and hunters to gather them, for his eyes see all their ways. The chapter ends with the nations themselves coming to God from the ends of the earth, confessing that their fathers inherited only lies—a hint of the gospel reaching far beyond Judah.
Voices
- Jeremiah — The prophet whose forbidden marriage, mourning, and feasting turn his whole life into a walking sign of judgment and coming restoration.
- Yahweh (the LORD) — The God who withdraws his peace from a rebellious people, yet promises to gather them again and draw the nations to himself.
- The people of Judah — A nation that has outdone its fathers in idolatry, walking in stubbornness of heart, soon to be exiled to an unknown land.
- The nations — Peoples from the ends of the earth who will one day come to Yahweh, confessing that their inherited idols were nothing but lies.
Key Verse
Jeremiah 16:19 (WEB)
Yahweh, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, vanity and things in which there is no profit.
Lessons Learned
- God may call his servants to costly obedience that itself preaches a message to others.
- Sin is often inherited and intensified across generations until someone turns back (Jeremiah 16:11-12).
- Even the severest judgment in Jeremiah is laced with promises of gathering and restoration (Jeremiah 16:14-15).
- God's purpose reaches beyond Israel to draw the nations to himself as their refuge (Jeremiah 16:19).
- A faithful life is itself a sermon. By his very abstaining from marriage, mourning, and feasting (Jeremiah 16:2, 5, 8, WEB), Jeremiah's life becomes a sign that speaks louder than words.
- Withdrawn mercy is a fearful thing. God says, “I have taken away my peace from this people… even loving kindness and tender mercies” (Jeremiah 16:5, WEB). To lose his nearness is the heart of judgment.
- Hope is hidden inside judgment. Even here God promises, “I will bring them again into their land” (Jeremiah 16:15, WEB). His final word over his people is restoration, not ruin.
- God is the refuge of the nations. “To you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth” (Jeremiah 16:19, WEB). The gospel's reach to all peoples is foreseen even here.
- Why would God ask Jeremiah to forgo marriage, mourning, and feasting, and how do these prohibitions communicate his message?
- What does the loss of God's “peace… loving kindness and tender mercies” (16:5) reveal about the nature of judgment?
- How do the promises in verses 14-15 change the tone of the chapter?
- What does it mean that the nations will come to God confessing their fathers “inherited nothing but lies” (16:19)?
- Is God calling you to any costly obedience that might itself be a witness to others? What holds you back?
- Each prohibition turns Jeremiah's ordinary life into a vivid sign: no weddings because no families will survive, no funerals because the dead will be too many to mourn, no feasts because joy is ending (16:2-9). His loneliness embodies the desolation that is coming, provoking the people to ask why.
- The greatest loss is not material but relational—the withdrawal of God's nearness and steadfast love. Help the group see that the worst of judgment is separation from God himself, which makes the promise of his presence in Christ all the more precious.
- Suddenly the language of exodus reappears: God will gather his people from the north as surely as he once brought them from Egypt (16:14-15). The judgment is real, but it is not the end of the story; restoration is woven into the very oracle of doom.
- The verse anticipates the day when peoples everywhere abandon their false hopes and find their refuge in the true God. It points toward the gospel going to all nations, who discover that their inherited idols were empty. Encourage the group to see the missionary heart of God even in Jeremiah.
- This is a personal-application question. Invite members to consider whether faithfulness is asking something costly of them—a stand, a sacrifice, a different way of living. As leader, affirm that obedience itself can be a powerful witness, and keep the tone gracious rather than guilt-driven.
