Isaiah 54: The Barren One Sings
The forsaken city is told to enlarge her tent, for her Maker is her husband and his covenant of peace will never be removed.
Isaiah 54 (WEB)
1 “Sing, barren, you who didn’t bear; break out into singing, and cry aloud, you who did not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife,” says Yahweh.
2 “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your habitations; don’t spare: lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.
3 For you shall spread out on the right hand and on the left; and your seed shall possess the nations, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
4 “Don’t be afraid; for you shall not be ashamed: neither be confounded; for you shall not be disappointed: for you shall forget the shame of your youth; and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.
5 For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name: and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; the God of the whole earth shall he be called.
6 For Yahweh has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, even a wife of youth, when she is cast off,” says your God.
7 “For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you.
8 In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment; but with everlasting loving kindness will I have mercy on you,” says Yahweh your Redeemer.
9 “For this is like the waters of Noah to me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah shall no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.
10 For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my loving kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of peace be removed,” says Yahweh who has mercy on you.
11 “You afflicted, tossed with storms, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.
12 I will make your pinnacles of rubies, and your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your children shall be taught of Yahweh; and great shall be the peace of your children.
14 In righteousness you shall be established: you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not be afraid; and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15 Behold, they may gather together, but not by me: whoever shall gather together against you shall fall because of you.
16 “Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals, and brings out a weapon for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
17 No weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of Yahweh, and their righteousness which is of me,” says Yahweh.
Isaiah 54 (KJV)
1 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord.
2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
6 For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.
7 For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.
8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.
9 For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.
10 For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
11 O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
12 And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
13 And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
15 Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.
16 Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.
17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.

Summary
Following the servant's sacrifice, this chapter bursts into song. The barren woman who never bore children is told to sing aloud, for the desolate will have more children than the married wife. She must enlarge her tent, lengthen her cords, and strengthen her stakes, for her offspring will spread out and possess the nations. She need not fear shame, for her Maker is her husband—Yahweh of Armies is his name—and the Holy One of Israel is her Redeemer. God admits that for a brief moment he hid his face in wrath, but with everlasting loving kindness he will gather her with great mercies. As surely as he swore that the waters of Noah would never again flood the earth, he swears that his loving kindness will not depart and his covenant of peace will not be removed, even if the mountains themselves should crumble. He promises to rebuild his afflicted city with precious stones and to teach all her children, establishing her in righteousness far from oppression and terror. The chapter ends with a sweeping promise: no weapon formed against his servants will prevail, for their righteousness is from him. This is the heritage of those redeemed by the servant of the previous chapter.

Key Verse
Isaiah 54:10 (WEB)
For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my loving kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall my covenant of peace be removed,” says Yahweh who has mercy on you.
Lessons Learned
- God can bring abundant fruitfulness out of barrenness and shame.
- The Lord binds himself to his people as a husband to a wife, with covenant faithfulness.
- God's anger toward his people is brief, but his loving kindness toward them is everlasting.
- The security of the redeemed rests not on their strength but on God's unbreakable promise.
- God turns barrenness into joyful fruitfulness. The childless one is told to sing because “more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife” (Isaiah 54:1, WEB).
- The Lord himself is the husband of his people. “For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name” (Isaiah 54:5, WEB), and he is their Redeemer.
- God's mercy outlasts his momentary wrath. “For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you” (Isaiah 54:7, WEB).
- The covenant of peace is more secure than the mountains. Though the mountains depart, “my covenant of peace” shall not “be removed” (Isaiah 54:10, WEB). Our standing rests on his oath.
- Why is the barren woman commanded to sing, and what does the imagery of enlarging the tent suggest?
- What does it mean that God is both the “Maker” and the “husband” of his people (54:5)?
- How does the comparison to the waters of Noah (54:9) strengthen the promise that follows?
- What hope does verse 17 offer to a people who feel surrounded by opposition?
- Where in your life do you need to trust that God's loving kindness will not depart, even when everything feels shaken?
- The barren one sings because God will give her more children than she could imagine, so she must make room for them (54:1-3). The enlarged tent pictures a people once empty now overflowing—a foretaste of the great family God gathers through the servant's work.
- As Maker, God created his people; as husband, he commits himself to them in covenant love and faithfulness (54:5). The image assures a forsaken people that they are not abandoned but cherished, redeemed by the Holy One of Israel.
- God once swore the flood would never again cover the earth, and he has kept that oath ever since. By tying his promise of mercy to that same unbreakable word (54:9-10), he gives his people rock-solid assurance that his peace toward them is permanent.
- Verse 17 promises that “no weapon that is formed against you will prevail,” and that this is “the heritage of the servants of Yahweh.” Their vindication is God's gift, not their achievement; encourage the group to rest in his protection rather than their own defenses.
- This is a personal-application question. Invite members to name an area of upheaval and to anchor it to verse 10's promise. As leader, hold out the steadiness of God's covenant love as the ground beneath shifting circumstances.
