Haggai 2: A Greater Glory Coming
God meets a discouraged people with his presence, promises a glory and peace greater than the former temple, and pledges blessing through a chosen King.
Haggai 2 (WEB)
1 In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
2 “Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
3 ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn’t it in your eyes as nothing?
4 Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says Yahweh. ‘Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ says Yahweh, ‘and work, for I am with you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.
5 This is the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit lived among you. ‘Don’t be afraid.’
6 For this is what Yahweh of Armies says: ‘Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land;
7 and I will shake all nations. The precious things of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of Armies.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,’ says Yahweh of Armies.
9 ‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies; ‘and in this place will I give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
10 In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, Yahweh’s word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
11 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
12 ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, will it become holy?’” The priests answered, “No.”
13 Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, will it be unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.”
14 Then Haggai answered, “‘So is this people, and so is this nation before me,’ says Yahweh; ‘and so is every work of their hands. That which they offer there is unclean.
15 Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in Yahweh’s temple.
16 Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.
17 I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me,’ says Yahweh.
18 ‘Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Yahweh’s temple was laid, consider it.
19 Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven’t produced. From this day will I bless you.’”
20 Yahweh’s word came the second time to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, ‘I will shake the heavens and the earth.
22 I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots, and those who ride in them. The horses and their riders will come down, everyone by the sword of his brother.
23 In that day, says Yahweh of Armies, will I take you, Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says Yahweh, ‘and will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
Haggai 2 (KJV)
1 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the Lord by the prophet Haggai, saying,
2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the Lord; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the Lord, and work: for I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts:
5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
6 For thus saith the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts.
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts.
10 In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet, saying,
11 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the Lord; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the Lord:
16 Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.
17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the Lord.
18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid, consider it.
19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
20 And again the word of the Lord came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,
21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;
22 And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
23 In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts.

Summary
A month into the work, God sends a second word through Haggai. Those who remembered Solomon's temple were dismayed, for this new house seemed as nothing in their eyes. God meets their discouragement with tender courage: “Be strong, Zerubbabel… be strong, Joshua… be strong, all you people of the land… and work, for I am with you.” He reminds them of the covenant made at the Exodus and tells them not to fear, for his Spirit remains among them. Then he lifts their gaze with a stunning promise: he will shake the heavens and the nations, the precious things of all peoples will come, and he will fill this house with glory, so that its latter glory will be greater than the former, and in this place he will give peace. In a third word, God uses a question to the priests about holy meat and a defiled body to show that the people's offerings had been unclean because their hearts were divided; yet from the day the foundation was renewed, he promises, “From this day will I bless you.” Finally God turns to Zerubbabel, promising to shake kingdoms and to make him a signet, his chosen servant—a sign pointing forward to the coming King in David's line.
Main Characters
- Haggai — The prophet who carries God's words of courage, promise, correction, and blessing to the rebuilding community in a single season.
- Yahweh of Armies (the LORD) — The God who strengthens the discouraged, promises a greater glory and lasting peace, blesses the obedient, and pledges a chosen King.
- Zerubbabel — The governor in David's line whom God names his chosen signet, a living sign of the Messiah to come.
- Joshua the high priest — The son of Jehozadak, encouraged to be strong and to keep working, leading the people alongside Zerubbabel.
Key Verse
Haggai 2:9 (WEB)
‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says Yahweh of Armies; ‘and in this place will I give peace,’ says Yahweh of Armies.”
Lessons Learned
- God does not despise the day of small things; he meets disappointment with his promised presence.
- Real courage comes from the assurance that God is with us in the work he has given.
- God's promised glory is far greater than anything we have lost or can yet imagine.
- Outward religious acts cannot cleanse a divided heart; only God can make us and our work acceptable.
- God's covenant purposes run through David's line to a chosen King, fulfilled in Christ.
- God strengthens the discouraged. Three times he says, “Be strong… and work, for I am with you” (Haggai 2:4, WEB). His presence turns fainthearted laborers into faithful builders.
- God's best is still ahead. “The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former” (Haggai 2:9, WEB). We work in hope because the glory and peace God promises outshine all we have lost.
- Holiness cannot be borrowed. The priests confirm that defilement spreads but holiness does not (Haggai 2:12-13, WEB). Only God can cleanse a people and make their offerings acceptable to him.
- God blesses from the day we obey. Though the barns are still empty, God pledges, “From this day will I bless you” (Haggai 2:19, WEB). Blessing rests on his grace, not on results we can show.
- God's promises center on a chosen King. He will make Zerubbabel “as a signet, for I have chosen you” (Haggai 2:23, WEB). The line of David carries forward to the Messiah who reigns forever.
- Why were some of the people discouraged by the new temple, and how does God address them in verses 3-5?
- What is God promising in the “shaking” of the heavens and nations and the filling of the house with glory (2:6-9)?
- What does the priests' answer about holy meat and defilement teach the people about their hearts (2:11-14)?
- Why does God promise “From this day will I bless you” (2:19) even before the harvest improves?
- How does God's word to Zerubbabel as his “signet” point to Jesus, and how does that encourage you to keep serving even in small or hidden work?
- Those who had seen Solomon's temple found the new one looked “as nothing” by comparison (2:3). Rather than scold them, God commands courage and recalls his covenant and Spirit among them (2:4-5). Help the group see how God answers discouragement with his presence, not with pressure to perform.
- God promises to shake everything and to fill the house with glory, declaring its latter glory greater than the former and pledging peace “in this place” (2:6-9). The promise overflows the modest temple toward the day the Lord himself comes, fulfilled in Christ, the true temple and our peace.
- The priests confirm that holiness is not contagious but uncleanness spreads (2:12-13). God applies it: a half-hearted people cannot sanctify their offerings by ritual alone (2:14). The lesson exposes the need for true cleansing, which God alone provides—ultimately through Christ.
- Though seed, vine, and fruit trees have not yet produced, God promises blessing “from this day” (2:18-19). The blessing is tied to their renewed obedience, not to a harvest already in hand. Encourage the group that God's grace runs ahead of visible results.
- A signet bore the king's authority and seal; God makes Zerubbabel, of David's line, his chosen signet (2:23). This anticipates Jesus, the chosen Son of David who reigns forever. This part is also personal application; invite members to keep serving faithfully, trusting that God weaves even small labors into his great purposes.
