The Book of Acts · Chapter 16

Acts 16: The Gospel Comes to Philippi

Paul's team reaches Macedonia, where Lydia, a slave girl, and a jailer are changed.

Summary

Paul is joined by Timothy and, after a vision of a man pleading for help, the team crosses into Macedonia. In Philippi a businesswoman named Lydia responds to the message and opens her home to them. When Paul frees a slave girl from a spirit used for fortune-telling, her angry owners have Paul and Silas beaten and imprisoned. At midnight the two are singing hymns when an earthquake opens the prison, and the jailer — about to take his own life — instead believes and is baptized along with his whole household.
