The Book of 2 Samuel

Second Samuel is the story of one man's reign and one God's faithfulness. After the death of Saul, David is at last established as king over all Israel, captures Jerusalem, and brings the ark of God home with dancing and joy. At the height of his strength, God makes him a staggering promise: a son, a kingdom, and a throne established forever. Yet the same king who longed to build God a house then ruins his own, taking another man's wife and arranging another man's death. The second half of the book is the bitter harvest of that night on the rooftop, as the sword never departs from David's house and his own son rises against him. Through it all we meet a flawed, repentant, God-loving king whose greatness and failures alike point past himself to the true and greater Son of David who would reign forever.
