Psalms 97: The Lord Reigns Supreme
An enthronement psalm picturing Yahweh's majestic reign in clouds and fire, calling the righteous to rejoice and to hate evil while idols are put to shame.
Psalms 97 (WEB)
1 Yahweh reigns! Let the earth rejoice! Let the multitude of islands be glad!
2 Clouds and darkness are around him. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 A fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the world. The earth sees, and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of Yahweh, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare his righteousness. All the peoples have seen his glory.
7 Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion heard and was glad. The daughters of Judah rejoiced, because of your judgments, Yahweh.
9 For you, Yahweh, are most high above all the earth. You are exalted far above all gods.
10 You who love Yahweh, hate evil. He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous people! Give thanks to his holy Name.
Psalms 97 (KJV)
1 The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
8 Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O Lord.
9 For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
10 Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Summary
This enthronement psalm opens with the same triumphant cry as Psalm 93: Yahweh reigns! It immediately calls the whole earth and the distant islands to rejoice. God's reign is then painted in the imagery of a storm theophany—clouds and darkness around him, righteousness and justice as the foundation of his throne, fire going before him to consume his adversaries, lightning lighting up the world, and mountains melting like wax at his presence. The heavens declare his righteousness and all peoples see his glory. In the face of this majesty, those who serve idols are put to shame, and the psalm issues a startling command: worship him, all you gods. Zion hears and is glad, the daughters of Judah rejoice because of God's judgments, for Yahweh is most high above all the earth, exalted far above all gods. The psalm then turns ethical and pastoral: those who love Yahweh are called to hate evil, and they are assured that he preserves the souls of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light is sown for the righteous and gladness for the upright in heart, so the psalm ends with a call to be glad in Yahweh and to give thanks to his holy name. Christians see here the exalted reign of Christ, before whom every knee will bow, and whose people are called to love what he loves and hate what he hates.

Lessons Learned
- God's reign is both glorious and holy, founded on righteousness and justice.
- The majesty of God exposes the emptiness of every idol and rival.
- Loving God necessarily means hating evil; the two cannot be separated.
- God preserves the souls of his saints and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
- Light and gladness are sown for the righteous, so they are called to rejoice and give thanks.
- God's throne rests on righteousness and justice. “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne” (Psalm 97:2, WEB). His rule is never arbitrary; it is utterly just.
- His glory shames all idols. “Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols” (Psalm 97:7, WEB). Before the true God, every counterfeit is exposed.
- To love God is to hate evil. “You who love Yahweh, hate evil” (Psalm 97:10, WEB). Genuine love for God produces a corresponding hatred of what destroys and dishonors him.
- God guards the souls of his people. “He preserves the souls of his saints. He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked” (Psalm 97:10, WEB). His reign is also his protection.
- Joy is sown for the upright. “Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart” (Psalm 97:11, WEB). Present darkness gives way to a harvest of joy.
- What images does the psalm use to portray God's reign, and what do they communicate about him?
- What does it mean that righteousness and justice are the foundation of God's throne?
- Why does loving the Lord involve hating evil, and how do we do this without becoming harsh or self-righteous?
- What promises does the psalm give to the saints and the upright in heart?
- What is one form of evil that loving God might lead you to turn away from this week?
- Clouds, darkness, fire, lightning, and melting mountains (97:2-5) portray God as a majestic, holy King whose presence is overwhelming. These storm images convey both his unapproachable glory and his power to consume all that opposes him.
- It means his rule is morally perfect; everything he decrees and does is right and fair (97:2). Unlike earthly rulers, God never governs by whim or corruption; justice is the very ground he stands on.
- Because God himself hates what is evil, those who love him share his heart (97:10). The aim is not contempt for people but a settled opposition to sin; this is rooted in love for God and others, not pride, so it stays humble.
- He preserves the souls of his saints, delivers them from the wicked, and sows light and gladness for the righteous (97:10-11). Those who belong to him are guarded now and assured of joy to come.
- This is a gentle personal-application question. Invite members to name, even privately, one thing they sense God calling them to turn from, framed as a fruit of loving him rather than mere rule-keeping. Keep the tone gracious and encouraging.
