Numbers 34: The Borders of the Promise
God marks out the boundaries of Canaan and names the leaders who will divide the land among the tribes.
Numbers 34 (WEB)
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2 “Command the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders),
3 then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the side of Edom, and your south border shall be from the end of the Salt Sea eastward.
4 Your border shall turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and it shall pass southward of Kadesh Barnea; and it shall go from there to Hazar Addar, and pass along to Azmon.
5 The border shall turn about from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and it shall end at the sea.
6 “‘For the western border, you shall have the great sea and its border. This shall be your west border.
7 “‘This shall be your north border: from the great sea you shall mark out for yourselves Mount Hor.
8 From Mount Hor you shall mark out to the entrance of Hamath; and the border shall pass by Zedad.
9 Then the border shall go to Ziphron, and it shall end at Hazar Enan. This shall be your north border.
10 “‘You shall mark out your east border from Hazar Enan to Shepham.
11 The border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain. The border shall go down, and shall reach to the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward.
12 The border shall go down to the Jordan, and end at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders around it.’”
13 Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe;
14 for the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers’ houses, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers’ houses, have received, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received, their inheritance.
15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.”
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
17 “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.
18 You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance.
19 These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
20 Of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.
21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.
22 Of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli.

Summary
With Israel poised to enter, Yahweh draws the boundaries of the land they will inherit. He describes the southern border running from the wilderness of Zin past Kadesh Barnea to the brook of Egypt and the sea; the western border along the great sea; the northern border from the sea to Mount Hor and Hazar Enan; and the eastern border down to the sea of Chinnereth and along the Jordan to the Salt Sea. This is the land that will fall to the nine and a half tribes by lot, for Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance east of the Jordan. God then names the men who will divide the land: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun, together with one prince from each tribe, including faithful Caleb of Judah. By giving precise borders and named leaders before the conquest has even begun, God speaks of the inheritance as already settled and certain. The chapter reveals a God who keeps the promise made to Abraham, who orders the gift of the land with care, and who entrusts its distribution to appointed servants. For a people about to step into the unknown, these defined borders are a word of assurance that their future rests in the faithful hand of God.
Key Figures
- Yahweh (the LORD) — The God who defines the borders of the inheritance and keeps the promise of land made long before to Abraham.
- Eleazar the priest — The high priest appointed, with Joshua, to oversee the dividing of the land among the tribes.
- Joshua the son of Nun — The Spirit-filled successor of Moses charged with leading Israel and apportioning their inheritance.
- Caleb and the tribal princes — One leader from each tribe, including faithful Caleb of Judah, chosen to divide the land for inheritance.
Key Verse
Numbers 34:2 (WEB)
“Command the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land of Canaan (this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders),
Lessons Learned
- God's promises are definite and detailed, not vague hopes but a sure inheritance.
- The Lord prepares the gift before his people have lifted a hand to receive it.
- God entrusts the carrying out of his purposes to appointed, faithful servants.
- Boundaries given in advance are a word of assurance for those stepping into the unknown.
- The inheritance of the land points ahead to the certain inheritance God's people have in Christ.
- God's promises are specific. The Lord describes the land “according to its borders” (Numbers 34:2, WEB). His promises are not vague but defined, sure enough to be mapped before they are entered.
- The inheritance is God's gift. The land “shall fall to you for an inheritance” (Numbers 34:2, WEB). It is bestowed by God's grace and faithfulness, not earned by Israel's strength.
- God appoints leaders to serve. Eleazar, Joshua, and a prince from each tribe are named “to divide the land” (Numbers 34:17-18, WEB). God works through chosen, accountable servants.
- A settled future calms present fear. God speaks of the inheritance as good as given before the conquest begins (Numbers 34:13, WEB). His certainty about our future steadies us in the present.
- Why might God define the borders of the land so precisely before Israel has even entered it?
- What does it mean that the land is described as an “inheritance” that will “fall” to the tribes?
- What is the significance of naming the specific leaders who will divide the land, including Caleb?
- How does God's certainty about Israel's future inheritance speak to our own uncertainties?
- How does the promised land point forward to the inheritance believers have in Christ (see 1 Peter 1:3-4)?
- By mapping the borders in advance, God assures Israel that the inheritance is real and certain (34:1-12). The detail itself is an encouragement: a people about to face daunting enemies hear that their future home is already measured out by the God who keeps his word.
- An inheritance is received as a gift, not seized by merit; that it will “fall” to the tribes underscores God's gracious bestowal (34:2). The land comes through the promise to Abraham, fulfilled by God's faithfulness rather than Israel's achievement.
- Naming Eleazar, Joshua, and a prince from each tribe shows God's orderly provision and entrusts a sacred task to accountable servants (34:17-29). The inclusion of faithful Caleb honors his steadfastness from decades earlier; God remembers those who follow him wholly.
- God's confidence about Israel's future invites us to rest in his certainty rather than our fears (34:13). Just as he settled the borders before the battle, he holds our future securely. Encourage the group to anchor present anxieties in God's settled promises.
- Peter speaks of an inheritance “incorruptible and undefiled, that doesn't fade away, reserved in Heaven” for believers (1 Pet. 1:4). The mapped-out land foreshadows this surer inheritance secured in Christ. Help the group see Canaan as a shadow of the lasting home God has prepared.
