The Book of Nehemiah

Nehemiah is the story of a man who heard that Jerusalem's walls lay in ruins and would not rest until they were rebuilt—and of the God who turned a cupbearer's tears into a city restored. Through urgent prayer and practical planning, through ridicule, conspiracy, and inner discouragement, Nehemiah leads a discouraged remnant to finish the wall in fifty-two days. Yet the book makes plain that stones and gates are only the beginning; the real work is the rebuilding of a people, as Ezra reads the Law, the nation weeps and then rejoices, confesses its history, and binds itself anew to the Lord. Nehemiah shows us prayerful, courageous, God-dependent leadership, and points us toward the greater Builder who restores what sin has broken.
