The Book of Joel

Joel begins with disaster—wave after wave of locusts stripping the land bare—and turns that crisis into a trumpet blast. The prophet reads the plague as a sign of the coming Day of the Lord and calls God's people to tear their hearts, not their garments, and return to a God who is gracious and merciful. Out of that repentance God promises restoration: grain, wine, and oil restored, the years the locust ate given back, and, greater still, his Spirit poured out on all flesh. Peter would stand in Jerusalem at Pentecost and declare, “This is that which was spoken through the prophet Joel” (Acts 2:16), pointing every reader to the salvation found in the name of the Lord.
