Genesis 7 (WEB)

1 Yahweh said to Noah, “Come with all of your household into the ship, for I have seen your righteousness before me in this generation.

2 You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you, the male and his female. Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female.

3 Also of the birds of the sky, seven and seven, male and female, to keep seed alive on the surface of all the earth.

4 In seven days, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. Every living thing that I have made, I will destroy from the surface of the ground.”

5 Noah did everything that Yahweh commanded him.

6 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came on the earth.

7 Noah went into the ship with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, because of the floodwaters.

8 Clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and everything that creeps on the ground

9 went by pairs to Noah into the ship, male and female, as God commanded Noah.

10 After the seven days, the floodwaters came on the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep were burst open, and the sky’s windows were opened.

12 It rained on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13 In the same day Noah, and Shem, Ham, and Japheth—the sons of Noah—and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered into the ship—

14 they, and every animal after its kind, all the livestock after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort.

15 Pairs from all flesh with the breath of life in them went to Noah into the ship.

16 Those who went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded him; then Yahweh shut him in.

17 The flood was forty days on the earth. The waters increased, and lifted up the ship, and it was lifted up above the earth.

18 The waters rose, and increased greatly on the earth; and the ship floated on the surface of the waters.

19 The waters rose very high on the earth. All the high mountains that were under the whole sky were covered.

20 The waters rose fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.

21 All flesh died that moved on the earth, including birds, livestock, animals, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.

22 All on the dry land, in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died.

23 Every living thing was destroyed that was on the surface of the ground, including man, livestock, creeping things, and birds of the sky. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ship.

24 The waters flooded the earth one hundred fifty days.

Summary

Yahweh tells Noah to enter the ship with his household because he alone is found righteous in his generation. Noah gathers the animals by sevens and pairs, just as God instructed, and after seven days the floodwaters come. In Noah's six hundredth year the fountains of the great deep burst open and the sky's windows pour rain for forty days and nights. Once Noah, his family, and the creatures are aboard, Yahweh himself shuts him in. The waters rise until the highest mountains are covered, and every living thing that breathed on dry land perishes. Only Noah and those with him in the ship are left. The flood prevails over the earth for one hundred fifty days, displaying both the seriousness of judgment and the safety of obedient faith.

Main Characters

  • Noah — The righteous man who does everything Yahweh commands and enters the ship with his household.
  • Yahweh — The God who judges the earth's wickedness yet personally shuts Noah safely inside the ark.
  • Noah's family — His wife, three sons, and their wives, who enter the ship and are preserved through the flood.

Key Verse

Genesis 7:16 (WEB)

Those who went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded him; then Yahweh shut him in.

Lessons Learned

  • God notices and preserves those who walk righteously even in a corrupt generation.
  • Obedience to God's word, step by step, is the path of safety when judgment comes.
  • The same waters that bring destruction become the means of deliverance for those inside the ark.
  • It is God himself who shuts the door, securing his people by his own faithful hand.
  • God sees and honors a righteous life. Yahweh tells Noah he has seen his righteousness in that generation, showing that God observes and values faithfulness even when it stands alone (Genesis 7:1, WEB).
  • Faith expresses itself in complete obedience. Scripture sums up Noah simply: he did everything that Yahweh commanded him, a pattern of wholehearted trust (Genesis 7:5, WEB).
  • God provides shelter before the storm breaks. Noah and the animals enter the ship before the floodwaters come, reminding us that God prepares refuge in advance of judgment (Genesis 7:7, WEB).
  • Salvation is secured by God's own hand. Once Noah is inside, Yahweh shuts him in, so that the safety of God's people rests on God's action, not their own grip (Genesis 7:16, WEB).
  • God's judgment against sin is real and thorough. Every living thing on dry land died, a sobering picture of the seriousness with which God treats pervasive evil (Genesis 7:23, WEB).
  • A faithful remnant is preserved through judgment. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ship, showing God's commitment to carry his people through to a new beginning (Genesis 7:23, WEB).
  1. What reason does Yahweh give Noah for bringing him into the ship (Genesis 7:1)?
  2. How does verse 5 describe Noah's response to God's instructions, and what does that reveal about his faith?
  3. Why is it significant that 'Yahweh shut him in' rather than Noah closing the door himself?
  4. Where in your own life is God asking you to obey now, before you can see the storm coming?
  5. How does the safety of those inside the ark shape the way you think about trusting God in times of judgment or upheaval?
  1. Yahweh says he has seen Noah's righteousness before him in this generation (7:1); Noah is invited in not by chance but because he walked faithfully with God amid widespread corruption.
  2. Verse 5 says Noah did everything that Yahweh commanded him, with no recorded objection or delay; his faith was practical and complete, trusting God's word about a flood he had never seen.
  3. It shows that the security of God's people ultimately rests on God himself; Noah could not save himself, and the closed door pictures grace that holds us fast.
  4. Personal: invite group members to name one specific area of obedience God may be prompting now. Encourage them to act in faith rather than waiting for visible proof, as Noah did.
  5. Personal: let people share honestly. Point them to the ark as a picture of refuge in God, encouraging them that those who trust him are kept safe by his faithfulness, not their own strength.
