The Book of Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes is the honest journal of a searcher. The Preacher—Qoheleth—has the means to chase every pleasure, the mind to master every wisdom, and the leisure to test every theory about what makes life worth living, and he reports back that everything “under the sun” is hevel: vapor, breath, here and gone. Pleasure cannot fill us, wisdom cannot save us, toil cannot last, and wealth cannot follow us into the grave. Yet this is no counsel of despair. Woven through the book is a quieter, steadier voice: there is a time for everything, eternity is set in our hearts, daily bread and work and love are gifts to receive from God's hand, and the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep his commandments. By clearing away every false foundation, Ecclesiastes prepares us to find lasting meaning only in God—a longing answered at last in Christ, in whom our labor is “not in vain.”
