The Book of 2 Peter

2 Peter is the apostle's farewell letter, written as he senses his death is near. He longs for believers to grow in grace and to guard the truth they have received. He urges them to make their calling and election sure by adding to their faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, and love; he anchors their confidence in the eyewitness testimony of Christ's majesty and the sure prophetic word of Scripture; he warns sharply against false teachers who exploit the flock and scoffers who deny the Lord's return; and he points ahead to the day of the Lord and the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. Through it all he calls the church to hold fast to Jesus Christ until the morning star rises in their hearts.
