2 Kings 11 (WEB)

1 Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal.

2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were slain, even him and his nurse, and put them in the bedroom; and they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not slain;

3 He was with her hidden in Yahweh’s house six years. Athaliah reigned over the land.

4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the captains over hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to him into Yahweh’s house; and he made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in Yahweh’s house, and showed them the king’s son.

5 He commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: a third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, shall be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;

6 A third part shall be at the gate Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard. So you shall keep the watch of the house, and be a barrier.

7 The two companies of you, even all who go out on the Sabbath, shall keep the watch of Yahweh’s house around the king.

8 You shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand; and he who comes within the ranks, let him be slain. Be with the king when he goes out, and when he comes in.”

9 The captains over hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men, those who were to come in on the Sabbath, with those who were to go out on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 The priest delivered to the captains over hundreds the spears and shields that had been king David’s, which were in Yahweh’s house.

11 The guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, around the king.

12 Then he brought out the king’s son, and put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, “Long live the king!”

13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into Yahweh’s house:

14 and she looked, and behold, the king stood by the pillar, as the tradition was, and the captains and the trumpets by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes, and cried, “Treason! Treason!”

15 Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, “Bring her out between the ranks. Kill him who follows her with the sword.” For the priest said, “Don’t let her be slain in Yahweh’s house.”

16 So they made way for her; and she went by the way of the horses’ entry to the king’s house. She was slain there.

17 Jehoiada made a covenant between Yahweh and the king and the people, that they should be Yahweh’s people; between the king also and the people.

18 All the people of the land went to the house of Baal, and broke it down; his altars and his images broke they in pieces thoroughly, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. The priest appointed officers over Yahweh’s house.

19 He took the captains over hundreds, and the Carites, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from Yahweh’s house, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. He sat on the throne of the kings.

20 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. Athaliah they had slain with the sword at the king’s house.

21 Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.

Summary

When Athaliah, mother of the dead king Ahaziah, sees her son is gone, she seizes power and destroys all the royal heirs, threatening to extinguish the line of David. But Jehosheba, the king's daughter and sister of Ahaziah, steals away the infant Joash and his nurse, hiding them in the house of the LORD for six years while Athaliah reigns. In the seventh year, the priest Jehoiada acts. He gathers the captains of the guard, makes a covenant with them in the temple, and shows them the king's son. Carefully arranging the armed guard around the boy, he brings out Joash, crowns him, gives him the testimony, anoints him, and the people clap and shout, “Long live the king!” Athaliah, hearing the noise, rushes into the temple, tears her clothes, and cries, “Treason!”—but Jehoiada orders her taken out and killed by the king's house, not in the LORD's sanctuary. Jehoiada then makes a covenant that king and people will be the LORD's, and the people tear down the temple of Baal, smashing its altars and images and killing its priest. Joash, only seven years old, is seated on the throne, and the city is at peace.

Main Characters

  • Athaliah — Ahaziah's mother, who seizes the throne by murdering the royal heirs and reigns six years until she is overthrown and slain.
  • Jehosheba — The king's daughter who courageously rescues the infant Joash from the slaughter and hides him in the temple, preserving David's line.
  • Jehoiada the priest — The faithful priest who shelters Joash, orchestrates his coronation, renews the covenant with the LORD, and topples Baal worship.
  • Joash (Jehoash) — The rescued boy-king of David's line, hidden six years and crowned at seven years old amid the people's rejoicing.

Key Verse

2 Kings 11:12 (WEB)

Then he brought out the king’s son, and put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, “Long live the king!”

Lessons Learned

  • God preserves his promises even when human evil seems poised to destroy them.
  • One courageous act of faith, like Jehosheba's, can protect what God intends to bless.
  • Faithful leaders are willing to risk much to set things right and honor the LORD.
  • True renewal pairs the right king with a renewed covenant and the tearing down of idols.
  • God guards his covenant promise. Though Athaliah destroys “all the seed royal” (2 Kings 11:1, WEB), one heir is hidden. The line of David, and the promise of a coming King, cannot be wiped out.
  • Courage preserves what God blesses. Jehosheba “stole him away” and hid Joash six years (2 Kings 11:2-3, WEB). God often works through the brave, quiet faithfulness of one person.
  • Renewal restores the right king. Jehoiada crowns Joash and they cry, “Long live the king!” (2 Kings 11:12, WEB). Setting things right means enthroning rightful, godly authority.
  • Covenant renewal tears down idols. The people make a covenant to be “Yahweh’s people” and break down “the house of Baal” (2 Kings 11:17-18, WEB). Returning to God means removing rival worship.
  1. How does Jehosheba's act of hiding Joash protect more than just one child?
  2. What does Jehoiada's careful planning reveal about godly leadership in a dangerous moment?
  3. Why is the renewal of the covenant between the LORD, the king, and the people so important after the coronation?
  4. How does the preservation of David's line in this chapter point forward to Christ?
  5. Where might God be calling you to a quiet act of courage to protect or preserve something he values?
  1. By rescuing Joash, Jehosheba preserves the entire Davidic line through which God had promised an everlasting kingdom. Her single brave act safeguards the covenant itself. God's great purposes can hang, humanly speaking, on one person's faithfulness.
  2. Jehoiada moves patiently and wisely—waiting six years, securing the guards by covenant, arranging their positions, protecting the boy. Godly leadership combines bold conviction with careful prudence, acting decisively yet thoughtfully to honor the LORD.
  3. The coronation alone would not heal the nation; the covenant binds king and people afresh to be the LORD's, and the destruction of Baal's temple follows. True reformation is not merely a change of rulers but a renewed devotion to God.
  4. Athaliah's attempt to destroy the royal seed and God's preservation of one hidden heir foreshadow the many threats to the line of David—and God's faithfulness in bringing forth Christ, the true King, despite every effort to extinguish the promise.
  5. This is a personal-application question. Invite members to consider the people, truths, or works God may be entrusting to their quiet protection. Encourage faithful, even unseen, courage, trusting that God uses such acts in his larger purposes.
