2 Chronicles 22: When Wickedness Reigns
Ahaziah follows Ahab's house to his ruin, and his mother Athaliah seizes the throne by murdering the royal family, while one infant is hidden.
2 Chronicles 22 (WEB)
1 The inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place; for the band of men who came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
2 Forty-two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.
3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab; for his mother was his counselor to do wickedly.
4 He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, as did the house of Ahab; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction.
5 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth Gilead: and the Syrians wounded Joram.
6 He returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which they had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.
7 Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God, in that he went to Joram: for when he had come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom Yahweh had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.
8 When Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah, serving Ahaziah, and killed them.
9 He sought Ahaziah, and they caught him (now he was hiding in Samaria), and they brought him to Jehu, and killed him; and they buried him, for they said, “He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought Yahweh with all his heart.” The house of Ahaziah had no power to hold the kingdom.
10 Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal seed of the house of Judah.
11 But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn’t kill him.
12 He was with them hidden in God’s house six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.
2 Chronicles 22 (KJV)
1 And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.
2 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.
3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly.
4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.
5 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria at Ramoth–gilead: and the Syrians smote Joram.
6 And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. And Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel, because he was sick.
7 And the destruction of Ahaziah was of God by coming to Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.
8 And it came to pass, that, when Jehu was executing judgment upon the house of Ahab, and found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah, that ministered to Ahaziah, he slew them.
9 And he sought Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was hid in Samaria,) and brought him to Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart. So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom.
10 But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.
11 But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not.
12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.

Summary
After Jehoram's death, the people make his youngest son Ahaziah king, since raiders had killed the older sons. Ahaziah reigns only one year, and he too walks in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother Athaliah, a daughter of Omri's line, is his counselor in wickedness. Following bad counsel, he joins Joram of Israel in war against Hazael of Syria, then goes to visit the wounded Joram in Jezreel. The chronicler explains that Ahaziah's downfall is from God, for during his visit Jehu, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab, finds and kills him along with the princes of Judah. Ahaziah is given a burial only because he was a grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. When Athaliah sees that her son is dead, she rises and destroys all the royal seed of the house of Judah to seize power for herself. But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of Jehoiada the priest, takes the infant Joash from among the doomed princes and hides him in God's house for six years, while Athaliah reigns over the land. The chapter shows how a household given to wickedness breeds destruction, yet how God preserves the thread of his promise through one courageous act of rescue.

Key Verse
2 Chronicles 22:11 (WEB)
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were slain, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (for she was the sister of Ahaziah), hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn’t kill him.
Lessons Learned
- The counsel we listen to shapes our destiny; bad advisors can lead us to ruin.
- Wickedness in a family tends to multiply, spilling into the next generation.
- God's purposes are not thwarted even when evil seems to seize total control.
- One faithful, courageous act can preserve hope when all seems lost.
- Ungodly counsel leads to destruction. Ahaziah's family “were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction” (2 Chronicles 22:4, WEB); whose voice we heed matters.
- God's hand governs even downfall. “Now the destruction of Ahaziah was of God” (2 Chronicles 22:7, WEB); the LORD remains sovereign even over the fall of the wicked.
- Evil cannot finally erase God's promise. Though Athaliah “destroyed all the royal seed” (2 Chronicles 22:10, WEB), God preserved one child to keep David's lamp burning.
- Courageous faith preserves hope. Jehoshabeath “hid him from Athaliah, so that she didn’t kill him” (2 Chronicles 22:11, WEB), a single brave act that guarded the covenant line.
- How does Athaliah's influence shape Ahaziah, and what warning does that carry about counsel?
- What does it mean that “the destruction of Ahaziah was of God,” even amid human scheming?
- Athaliah tries to wipe out the royal line. How does God's promise to David survive her purge?
- Consider Jehoshabeath's risk in hiding Joash. What does her courage teach us?
- Whose counsel are you most shaped by, and is it drawing you toward God or away from him?
- Athaliah counsels Ahaziah to wickedness, and Ahab's house guides him after his father's death, all to his destruction (22:3-4). He becomes what surrounds him. The text warns that we are profoundly shaped by the voices we trust most closely.
- It means that even the tangle of war, wounds, and Jehu's revolt served God's purpose to cut off Ahab's house (22:7-8). God's sovereignty does not excuse human evil, but it assures us he is never out of control, even in chaos.
- Athaliah destroys the royal seed, but Jehoshabeath rescues the infant Joash and hides him for six years (22:10-12). God preserves his promise through a single hidden child, pointing forward to how he guards the line that leads to Christ. Evil overreaches, but cannot win.
- Hiding Joash put Jehoshabeath and her household in mortal danger from a murderous queen, yet she acted to save the child (22:11). Quiet, costly courage can be the means God uses to keep hope alive. Encourage the group to value faithfulness that no one may see.
- This is a personal-application question. Invite members to honestly assess their closest counselors and influences. Gently encourage them to seek out and heed voices that point them toward the LORD, as Ahaziah so tragically failed to do.
