2 Chronicles 11: Strengthening Judah
Forbidden by God to fight his brothers, Rehoboam fortifies Judah, and faithful priests and worshipers stream to Jerusalem to seek the LORD.
2 Chronicles 11 (WEB)
1 When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
2 But Yahweh’s word came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
3 “Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
4 ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers! Return every man to his house; for this thing is of me.”’” So they listened to Yahweh’s words, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and built cities for defense in Judah.
6 He built Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7 Beth Zur, and Soco, and Adullam,
8 and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9 and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10 and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.
11 He fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of food, and oil and wine.
12 He put shields and spears in every city, and made them exceeding strong. Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.
13 The priests and the Levites who were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their border.
14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest’s office to Yahweh;
15 and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the male goats, and for the calves which he had made.
16 After them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
17 So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.
18 Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19 and she bore him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.
20 After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bore him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21 Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and sixty concubines, and became the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.)
22 Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, the prince among his brothers; for he intended to make him king.
23 He dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, to every fortified city: and he gave them food in abundance. He sought for them many wives.
2 Chronicles 11 (KJV)
1 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.
2 But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,
4 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jeroboam.
5 And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.
6 He built even Beth–lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,
7 And Beth–zur, and Shoco, and Adullam,
8 And Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,
9 And Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,
10 And Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities.
11 And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.
12 And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.
13 And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts.
14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office unto the Lord:
15 And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.
16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the Lord God of their fathers.
17 So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
18 And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
19 Which bare him children; Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham.
20 And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; which bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.
21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and threescore daughters.)
22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.
23 And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.

Summary
Back in Jerusalem, Rehoboam musters a great army to fight Israel and recover the kingdom. But the word of Yahweh comes to Shemaiah the man of God, forbidding the war: “You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers,” for this thing is from God. Remarkably, they listen and turn back. Rehoboam settles in and fortifies many cities of Judah and Benjamin, stocking them with food, oil, wine, shields, and spears to make the kingdom strong. Meanwhile the priests and Levites from all over Israel leave their lands and come to Judah, because Jeroboam has cast them off and set up his own priests for the high places, goats, and golden calves he made. With them come those from every tribe who set their hearts to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, coming to Jerusalem to sacrifice. They strengthen the kingdom of Judah and support Rehoboam for three years, walking in the way of David and Solomon. The chapter ends with notes on Rehoboam's large family and his careful provision for his sons. It shows a kingdom strengthened less by walls than by the faithful who gather to worship the true God.
Main Characters
- Rehoboam — The king of Judah who obeys God's word against war, fortifies his cities, and for a time walks in the way of David.
- Shemaiah — The man of God who delivers Yahweh's word forbidding civil war, declaring the division to be from God.
- The priests, Levites, and faithful — Those who leave the north, rejected by Jeroboam, and stream to Jerusalem with all who set their hearts to seek the Lord.
Key Verse
2 Chronicles 11:16 (WEB)
After them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
Lessons Learned
- Obedience sometimes means standing down rather than fighting, when God forbids it.
- A kingdom's true strength lies in the faithful who gather to seek and worship God.
- Those who set their hearts to seek the Lord will go where they can worship him truly.
- Walking in the way of God brings a season of stability and strength.
- Obey God even when it costs your ambition. God says, “You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers… for this thing is of me” (2 Chronicles 11:4, WEB), and they listen. Submitting to God can mean laying down our plans to recover what we have lost.
- Set your heart to seek the Lord. The faithful are those who “set their hearts to seek Yahweh” (2 Chronicles 11:16, WEB). Genuine worship flows from a deliberate, heart-level pursuit of God.
- Go where God is truly worshiped. The priests and faithful left their homes and came to Jerusalem to sacrifice rightly (2 Chronicles 11:16-17, WEB). Devotion to God sometimes calls us to leave the convenient for the faithful.
- Walking in God's ways brings strength. They “strengthened the kingdom of Judah… for they walked… in the way of David and Solomon” (2 Chronicles 11:17, WEB). Faithfulness, while it lasts, steadies a people.
- Why does God forbid Rehoboam from fighting Israel, and how does Rehoboam respond?
- What draws the priests, Levites, and faithful from across Israel to Jerusalem?
- How does the gathering of the faithful actually strengthen the kingdom of Judah?
- The faithful left their homes to worship God truly. What might it cost you to prioritize genuine worship?
- Where is God calling you to stand down or change course in obedience, even when it feels like loss?
- God forbids the war because the division “is of me” (11:4), and surprisingly Rehoboam and the army obey and return home. It shows a moment of genuine submission, where the king lets go of his ambition to recover the lost tribes because God has spoken.
- Jeroboam cast off the true priests and set up false worship in the north (11:14-15), so the faithful and those who “set their hearts to seek Yahweh” (11:16) come south to worship rightly. They follow God rather than convenience or political loyalty.
- Their presence and faithful worship strengthen Judah for three years as they walk in the way of David and Solomon (11:17). A people's real strength lies not chiefly in fortifications but in hearts devoted to seeking God.
- This is partly personal application. The faithful left homes and possessions to worship truly (11:16). Invite the group to weigh what comforts or loyalties might be competing with wholehearted worship, and what faithful priorities would cost.
- This is a personal-application question. Encourage members to consider an area where obedience might mean surrendering a goal or changing direction, and to trust that God's “no” is also good. Keep the tone gentle and reassuring.
