The Book of 1 Timothy
First Timothy is a seasoned apostle's letter to a younger man he loves, written so that Timothy and the church at Ephesus would know how to behave in the household of God, the pillar and ground of the truth. Paul charges his true child in the faith to confront teachers of a different doctrine, to make prayer the first business of worship, to entrust leadership to overseers and deacons of tested character, and to train himself in godliness as an example to all. Threaded through the instructions is the gospel that holds the whole letter together: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom Paul calls himself the chief. It is a letter about church life that never loses sight of the Savior, calling leaders and members alike to keep the faith, honor one another, fight the good fight, and set their hope on the living God rather than the uncertainty of riches.
