The Book of 1 Kings

First Kings opens in the golden hour of Israel's story and ends in the long shadow of its decline. A young Solomon kneels before God and asks not for riches or long life but for a wise and understanding heart, and God gives him that and so much more. Under Solomon the temple rises, glory fills the house, and the nations come to hear his wisdom. Yet the same king who built a house for God's name fills his own house with foreign wives and foreign gods, and his divided heart fractures the kingdom he leaves behind. The book then follows the breakaway of the northern tribes, a procession of mostly faithless kings in both Israel and Judah, and the towering ministry of the prophet Elijah, who confronts wicked Ahab and Jezebel and calls down fire on Mount Carmel. Through it all 1 Kings presses one urgent question on every reader: will your heart be wholly devoted to the LORD, or will you waver between two opinions?
