1 John 5: That You May Know

Faith in Jesus the Son of God overcomes the world, and the testimony stands sure: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

1 John 5 (WEB)

1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. Whoever loves the Father also loves the child who is born of him.

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments.

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.

4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith.

5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

6 This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

7 For there are three who testify:

8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one.

9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is God’s testimony which he has testified concerning his Son.

10 He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who doesn’t believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.

11 The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12 He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.

13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

14 This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.

15 And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I don’t say that he should make a request concerning this.

17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.

18 We know that whoever is born of God doesn’t sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn’t touch him.

19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Summary

John gathers his themes into one: everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and to love the Father is to love his children. We know we love God's children when we love God and keep his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God overcomes the world—and the victory that overcomes the world is our faith. The one who overcomes is simply the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. John points to the threefold testimony to Jesus: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, which agree as one, for the witness of God is greater than any human witness, and God has testified concerning his Son. The one who believes in the Son has this testimony within; the one who does not believe makes God a liar. And here is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son does not have life. John states his purpose plainly—he has written these things to those who believe in the name of the Son of God so that they may know they have eternal life and may keep on believing. From there flows confidence in prayer, the call to intercede for a sinning brother, and a final string of certainties: those born of God are kept by him so the evil one cannot touch them; we belong to God while the world lies in the power of the evil one; and the Son of God has come and given us understanding to know the true God, who is eternal life. The letter closes with a tender warning: little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Key Figures

  • John — The apostle drawing his letter to a close by stating its purpose—that believers may know they have eternal life.
  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God — The one who came by water and blood, in whom God has given us eternal life, and whom to have is to have life itself.
  • The believers — Those who believe in the name of the Son of God, born of God, who overcome the world and are kept safe from the evil one.
  • The Spirit — The one who testifies because the Spirit is the truth, agreeing with the water and the blood in witness to the Son.

Key Verse

1 John 5:11 (WEB)

The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Lessons Learned

  • Faith that Jesus is the Son of God is the victory that overcomes the world.
  • God himself has testified concerning his Son, and his witness is greater than any human word.
  • Eternal life is God's gift, and it is found in the Son alone.
  • John wrote so that believers may know—not merely hope—that they have eternal life.
  • Those born of God are kept by him, secure against the evil one.
  • Faith overcomes the world. “This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith” (1 John 5:4, WEB). Trust in Christ, not our strength, wins the decisive battle.
  • God's own testimony is our foundation. “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater” (1 John 5:9, WEB). Assurance rests on what God has said about his Son.
  • Life is found only in the Son. “He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life” (1 John 5:12, WEB). Eternal life is not an abstraction but a Person.
  • We are meant to know we have eternal life. “These things I have written… that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13, WEB). Assurance is the very purpose of the letter.
  1. What does John mean that faith is “the victory that has overcome the world” (5:4-5)?
  2. What is the testimony God has given concerning his Son, and why does it matter (5:9-11)?
  3. Why is it so significant that “he who has the Son has the life” (5:12)?
  4. John finally states his purpose in 5:13. How does knowing you have eternal life differ from merely hoping for it?
  5. What fears or doubts keep you from resting in the assurance John offers, and what would change if you truly knew you have eternal life?
  1. The world here is everything set against God, and faith overcomes it not by our effort but by uniting us to the victorious Christ (5:4-5). Believing that Jesus is the Son of God is itself the conquering act. Encourage the group to see faith as resting on Christ's victory, not summoning their own.
  2. God has borne witness to his Son through the Spirit, the water, and the blood (5:6-9), and that divine testimony outweighs any human opinion. Assurance is not self-generated confidence but trust in what God himself has declared about Jesus. Anchor doubts there.
  3. Eternal life is not a thing we earn or a status we achieve but a Person we possess—Christ himself (5:11-12). To have the Son is to have life; to lack him is to lack it. This simplifies assurance: the question is whether we are trusting Jesus.
  4. Hope can waver with our moods, but knowing rests on God's testimony and promise. John wants settled confidence, not anxious guessing (5:13). Help the group see assurance as the normal, intended Christian experience, grounded in Christ rather than feelings.
  5. This is a personal-application question with no single answer. As leader, gently invite members to name what undermines their assurance, and return them to 5:11-13. Close by resting together in the promise that the life is in the Son, and whoever has the Son has the life.
