1 Chronicles 17: A House the Lord Will Build
David longs to build God a house, but God turns it around with a stunning promise: he will build David a house and an everlasting throne.
1 Chronicles 17 (WEB)
1 When David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is under curtains.”
2 Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart; for God is with you.”
3 That same night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4 “Go and tell David my servant, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You shall not build me a house to dwell in;
5 for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up Israel, to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tent to another.
6 In all places in which I have walked with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’
7 “Now therefore, you shall tell my servant David, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel.
8 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.
9 I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the first,
10 and from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover I tell you that Yahweh will build you a house.
11 It shall happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who shall be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
12 He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.
13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you;
14 but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne shall be established forever.”’”
15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
16 Then David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?
17 This was a small thing in your eyes, God; but you have spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have respected me according to the estate of a man of high degree, Yahweh God.
18 What can David say yet more to you concerning the honor which is done to your servant? For you know your servant.
19 Yahweh, for your servant’s sake, and according to your own heart, you have worked all this greatness, to make known all these great things.
20 Yahweh, there is no one like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
21 What one nation in the earth is like your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, to make you a name by great and awesome things, in driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeem out of Egypt?
22 For your people Israel you made your own people forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.
23 Now, Yahweh, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, be established forever, and do as you have spoken.
24 Let your name be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel. The house of David your servant is established before you.’
25 For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.
26 Now, Yahweh, you are God, and have promised this good thing to your servant.
27 Now it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Yahweh, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
1 Chronicles 17 (KJV)
1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remaineth under curtains.
2 Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.
3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,
4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:
5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.
6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?
7 Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
8 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
9 Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,
10 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the Lord will build thee an house.
11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.
13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.
15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
16 And David the king came and sat before the Lord, and said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
17 And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O Lord God.
18 What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.
19 O Lord, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
20 O Lord, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Lord, becamest their God.
23 Therefore now, Lord, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
24 Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.
25 For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.
26 And now, Lord, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
27 Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O Lord, and it shall be blessed for ever.

Summary
Settled in his cedar palace, David tells the prophet Nathan that it troubles him that he lives in a house of cedar while the ark of the covenant rests under tent curtains. Nathan encourages him to do all that is in his heart, for God is with him. But that night God's word comes to Nathan with a different message. David is not the one to build God a house; the LORD has never asked for a house of cedar but has moved from tent to tent among his people. Instead, God reminds David that he took him from following sheep to be prince over Israel, has been with him, and will make his name great. Then comes the great covenant promise: Yahweh himself will build David a house. When David's days are fulfilled, God will raise up his offspring, establish his kingdom, and that son will build a house for God's name, whose throne God will establish forever. God says he will be a father to him and he a son, and will not remove his loving kindness as he did from Saul, settling him in God's house and kingdom forever, his throne established forever. Overwhelmed, David goes in and sits before the LORD, marveling, “Who am I?” He praises God's incomparable greatness, his redemption of Israel, and asks that the promise concerning his house be established forever. The chapter reaches far beyond Solomon to the eternal King, Jesus, the Son of David whose throne will never end.
Main Characters
- David — The king who desires to build God a temple but receives instead an everlasting promise, and responds with humble wonder and grateful prayer.
- Nathan the prophet — God's spokesman who first encourages David's plan, then faithfully delivers the LORD's corrective and far greater word that same night.
- Yahweh (the LORD) — The God who needs no house from human hands but graciously promises to build David an enduring dynasty and an everlasting throne.
- David's offspring (Solomon, pointing to Christ) — The promised son who will build God's house, whose throne is established forever, fulfilled ultimately in Jesus, the Son of David.
Key Verse
1 Chronicles 17:14 (WEB)
but I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever. His throne shall be established forever.”’”
Lessons Learned
- God is often more interested in what he will do for us than in what we plan to do for him (1 Chronicles 17:4, 10).
- God's promises reach far beyond our lifetime and our understanding, to generations and to eternity (1 Chronicles 17:11-14).
- The right response to God's grace is humble wonder and worship, not pride (1 Chronicles 17:16).
- The everlasting throne promised to David finds its true and final fulfillment in Jesus Christ (1 Chronicles 17:14).
- God builds; we receive. David wants to build God a house, but God says, “Yahweh will build you a house” (1 Chronicles 17:10, WEB). The gospel pattern is that God does the saving, establishing work; we receive his grace.
- God's plans are greater than ours. God redirects David's good desire toward a far larger promise of an everlasting kingdom (1 Chronicles 17:11-14). His “no” to a temple is a “yes” to something eternal.
- God's covenant love is unshakable. “I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you” (1 Chronicles 17:13, WEB). Unlike Saul's rejected line, this promise stands forever.
- An everlasting throne points to Christ. “His throne shall be established forever” (1 Chronicles 17:14, WEB). Solomon's reign was temporary; only Jesus, the Son of David, reigns on a throne that will never end.
- Grace produces humble wonder. David sits before the LORD and asks, “Who am I, Yahweh God... that you have brought me thus far?” (1 Chronicles 17:16, WEB). Undeserved promise rightly moves us to awe and gratitude.
- Nathan first tells David to follow his heart, then must deliver a different word from God. What does this teach about the difference between good ideas and God's revealed will?
- Why might God redirect David's desire to build a temple toward the promise that God will build David a house?
- Trace the covenant promise in verses 11-14. How does it stretch beyond Solomon to find its fulfillment in Jesus?
- How does David's prayer model the right response to overwhelming grace?
- When have your plans for serving God been redirected by him toward something different or larger, and how did you respond?
- Nathan's well-meant encouragement is corrected by God's actual word, showing that even godly counsel must bow to divine revelation. Help the group hold their good intentions humbly, ready to be reshaped by God's word and timing.
- God shifts the focus from David's gift to him to God's gift to David, underscoring grace: the LORD is the great giver and builder. Discuss how this guards us from a transactional view of serving God.
- The promise of an offspring, an established kingdom, and an eternal throne points beyond Solomon, whose reign ended, to Christ, whom the New Testament names the Son of David reigning forever (Luke 1:32-33). Lead the group to see Jesus as the promise's true fulfillment.
- David responds not with pride but with humble astonishment and worship, marveling at grace he did not earn. Encourage members to let God's kindness produce wonder and thanksgiving rather than entitlement.
- This is a gentle personal-application question. Invite members to share a time their service plans were redirected, and reflect together on trusting that God's redirections are often expansions of his grace, not denials of it.
